FrankenKeys · the specification

30 press effects and 50 synthesised key sounds

Every press effect, swipe trail, shader, key sound, haptic profile and theme in FrankenKeys, named and counted, with what is free and what Pro adds.

Every number on this page is a count of a list in the shipped build, and the list is named so you can count it yourself. Nothing here is a range or an estimate.

Thirty press effects

Ring pulse, Shockwave, Starburst, Echo, Square pulse, Sonar, Pond, Bloom, Lightning, Tesla, Static, Gravity well, Embers, Spark shower, Confetti, Ashfall, Orbit, Hex pulse, Crosshair, Scanline, Diamond, Comet, Lava, Flame, Ink drop, Neon flicker, Spotlight, Grid wave, Domino, Portal.

All thirty are drawn with circles, lines, arcs and one reused path, no GPU shaders, so they render identically on every Android version the keyboard runs on, from 10 up. Zero allocation on the draw path; a fixed pool of sixteen events. Stacking a second effect, and the Effect Forge for building your own from shape, motion, layer, size, duration, colour and fade, are part of Pro. How the engine works.

Fifteen swipe trails

Comet, Neon, Ribbon, Rainbow, Beads, Lightning, Ember, Ink, Laser, Smoke, Glitch, Sparkle, Dashes, Bubbles, Fire. Every one tapers toward the tail, and none of them animates unless a swipe is in flight.

Ten shaders

RGB wave, Glass, Sunset, Aurora, Matrix, Plasma, Nebula, Starfield, Lava lamp, Circuit.

These are real GPU programs in AGSL, which Android added in version 13. On Android 13 and later they animate. On Android 10 to 12 the same theme draws a still gradient instead. That is the honest count: ten moving shaders on 13 and up, ten still gradients below. The Shader Forge, for tuning any of them by speed, density, hue, direction, accent mix and brightness, is Pro.

Fifty key sounds, none of them recordings

Seven originals: Cherry, Topre, Cream, Tick, Typewriter, Bubble, Laser.

Twenty-three in the extra pack: Gateron red, Box jade, Holy panda, Alps blue, Beam spring, Buckling spring, Marble, Wood block, Glass tap, Raindrop, Heartbeat, Arcade, Sci-fi, Droplet, Thunder, Snare, Hi-hat, Bongo, Robot, Whisper, Crystal, Sub-thock, Plastic dome.

Ten in the dark pack: Coffin lid, Bone tap, Iron latch, Crypt drip, Music box, Chain link, Stone slab, Floor creak, Crypt bell, Jar lid.

Ten in the lab pack: Tesla arc, Jacob's ladder, Relay throw, Beaker clink, Flask bubble, Geiger tick, Vacuum tube, Lever pull, Jar of eyes, Lab bell. Every sound in both packs is an object being struck, dripped on or thrown, never a living thing in trouble, which is the rule that keeps the app rated for everyone.

All fifty are synthesised at startup by a C++ engine on Oboe, at 48 kHz, three variants each cycled so a fast typist never hears the same buffer twice in a row, with a fixed per-key pitch offset and a per-press velocity. There are no audio files in the package. A fifty-first slot takes your own sound, trimmed on a waveform to a fraction of a second; importing is Pro. How the sounds are made.

Twenty haptic profiles

Light to heavy: Feather, Soft, Light, Ripple, Twitch, Swell, Bump, Medium, Triple, Stagger, Pulse, Crisp, Decay, Double, Rebound, Strike, Thud, Anvil, Heavy, Jolt.

On Android 11 and later, where the motor reports support for the click and tick primitives, each profile is a composition of the motor's own tuned transients scaled by your intensity slider. On older hardware, predefined effects at full strength with a scaled waveform beneath. Twenty things separated by rhythm, not one thing at twenty volumes.

Thirty-one themes

FrankenKeys, Cyberpunk RGB, RGB Underglow, Synthwave, Aurora, Matrix Rain, Fluid Glass, Graphite, AMOLED Black, Paper, Midnight Ocean, Sakura, Ember, Forest Night, Royal Gold, Crimson Ops, Arctic Ice, Latte, Grape Soda, Mint, Slate Pro, Sunpaper, Vampire, Fjord, Campfire, Codeglow, Rose Gold, Coral Reef, Steel, Limelight, Obsidian Copper.

Plus Material You on Android 12 and later, resolved live from the system palette, which is not counted in the thirty-one because it is not a fixed palette. Theme Studio's colour tools, seven layers deep, are free; background photos and imported fonts are Pro.

N/I

Count them. In the shipped build: PressFx.STYLES (30), TrailFx.STYLES (15), ForgeTheme.ShaderFxKind less NONE (10), SoundProfiles.IDS less off and custom (50), HapticEngine.PROFILES less off (20), ForgeTheme.BUILT_IN (31). The build is unobfuscated, so the names are those names. How to open it.

Everything else in the box

A macro row you design. Per-app profiles, so your terminal and your group chat wear different boards. Per-key overrides: recolour, relabel, re-voice any key. A gesture mapper. Eleven key shapes: rounded, pill, chiclet, hex, circle, bevel, wireframe, frosted, squircle, octagon, teeth. Ambient particle backgrounds. Emoji search over the system font. A private GIF library with no network search. Text shortcuts with date, time and clipboard macros. Typing stats that never leave the phone. Whole builds shared as one code, one QR or one file, background picture included.

What is free and what is Pro

Everything that affects how the keyboard types is free: typing, prediction, autocorrect, swipe, dictation, AI rewrites, emoji, clipboard, every theme above, every sound, every haptic, every press effect, every trail, every shader, and Theme Studio's colours. Pro is a one-time unlock, no subscription, for the creation tools: background photos, imported fonts and sounds, per-app profiles, theme scheduling, the Effect Forge and second effect, the Shader Forge, unlimited saved scenes (free keeps two), the Key Editor and the macro row. The unlock page.

Every key you hit fires something. That was the design brief, and the lists above are what it turned into.
