FrankenKeys · the unlock

One payment, no subscription, no account

FrankenKeys is free. The one in-app purchase is a one-time Pro unlock for the creation tools, restored by Google Play on a new phone, with no account.

FrankenKeys is free to install and free to use, with no trial and no ads. There is exactly one in-app purchase: a one-time unlock called Pro. No subscription, no account, no sign-in, and the app has no server to hold any of those things.

What is free, and stays free

Everything that affects how well the keyboard types. Typing, prediction, autocorrect, swipe, voice typing, the on-device AI rewrites, emoji search, the clipboard, all thirty-one preset themes, all fifty key sounds, all twenty haptic profiles, all thirty press effects, all fifteen swipe trails, all ten shaders, and Theme Studio's colour tools. Nothing that makes the keyboard better at being a keyboard is behind the unlock, and it never will be.

What Pro unlocks

The creation tools:

  • Background photos, framed and dimmed how you like
  • Imported fonts
  • Imported key sounds, trimmed from any audio file
  • Per-app profiles, so each app can wear a different board
  • Theme scheduling
  • The Effect Forge, for building your own press effects, and stacking a second one
  • The Shader Forge, for tuning any shader's speed, hue, density and direction
  • Unlimited saved scenes; free keeps two
  • The Key Editor: recolour, relabel and re-voice any key
  • The macro row, your own row of snippets and actions

The price

Set in Play Console and shown by Google Play in your own currency. The app never hard-codes a number; the button reads "Unlock Pro" with whatever Play reports beside it. In the US store it is $6.99 at the time of writing. Once, forever.

N/I

Buying sends nothing from the keyboard. The purchase travels by inter-process communication to the Play Store app, which does its own networking on its own permission. The billing library adds com.android.vending.BILLING to the manifest and nothing else; the build fails if it ever adds more. The five permissions.

Restore, refund, and the file that is not a licence

New phone. Install FrankenKeys with the same Google account. When the billing library connects, it asks Play what the account owns, and Pro comes back. No code, no email, nothing to find.

Refund. Handled by Google Play under Google's standard terms. If Play reports the purchase refunded, the unlock is cleared on the next connection.

Backups. The backup file you can export is readable JSON inside a zip, because you own what the keyboard learned. The Pro flag is stripped on export and ignored on import, so a backup can never be passed around as a licence. Pro on a restored phone comes from Play, never from the file.

The mechanics in full.

Why it is called forgeboard_pro

The product id in Play is forgeboard_pro, from the app's previous name. Renaming a Play product voids every purchase made under the old id, so it keeps its name, the same way share codes and backup headers keep theirs. ForgeBoard is now FrankenKeys.

What I cannot offer

No discount codes of my own, no cross-platform licence, no purchase anywhere but Play, and no view of who bought it beyond Play's own reporting. Those are the costs of an app with no server, and they are the reason the answer to "what does the app send when I pay" is nothing.
